While we don't have access to the space because of insurance / construction restrictions, we know that there is significant damage to our costume collection. There are two immediate concerns: costuming West Side Story, and removing the costumes from the science wing as soon as possible to reduce further damage to the collection.
TAPS has provided thousands of dollars and hours to acquire, organize, clean, move, and store the GHS costume collection. Members of the Guilford community have generously donated many of the costume pieces in our collection. We have furs, leathers, and other items that are not water-friendly. Unfortunately, there isn't much we can do right now to prevent further damage, until we can get access to them.
But please stay tuned, and know that there may be (we hope there will be!) a need for a large group of volunteers to move boxes and soggy costumes to a new location where we can sort through them. We also may need a minivan brigade to be ready to transport costumes from a large costume rental facility to the high school. Please keep checking back here for updates.
The plan for this new costume location was for it to be outfitted with safe storage designed for the collection, in a locked, climate-controlled space, with room for the students and staff to work on costuming for GHS productions. We're working with Guilford Public Schools to see what we can do to ensure the costume room becomes a reality as quickly as possible.
Our students will be concerned and disappointed about what happened, but hopefully we can turn this into an opportunity for them to see that whatever happens, the show will go on, and it will be a great show.
